Baby First Tooth Care: Brushing, Feeding, and First Dental Visits

A first tooth is a small milestone with a useful new routine behind it. Gentle daily care can keep the focus on comfort, connection, and healthy habits rather than perfection.

Oral care can begin before you see a tooth. During ordinary diaper changes or bedtime cuddles, you can gently wipe gums with a clean damp cloth. When the first tooth appears, switch to a small soft toothbrush and make the moment brief and predictable.

Keep the first routine small

A tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste, about the size of a grain of rice, is commonly recommended once the first tooth erupts. Brush twice a day, especially after the last food or drink before bed. Your baby does not need to cooperate perfectly; calm repetition is the lesson.

  • Use a soft, age-appropriate toothbrush and a light touch.
  • Let your baby hold a second toothbrush while you do the cleaning.
  • Use a simple sequence: brush, book, bed.

Protect teeth in everyday routines

Teeth spend a lot of time around milk, food, and saliva, so routines matter more than one perfect brush. Avoid putting a baby to bed with a bottle, and offer water after meals when age-appropriate. Regular meals and a calm bedtime rhythm support both oral care and sleep.

If teething is making the day harder, keep comfort strategies simple and read our baby teething timeline for age-based expectations and safety reminders.

Plan the first dental visit

A first dental visit is usually recommended by your child’s first birthday or within six months of the first tooth appearing. It is a chance to ask about brushing, fluoride, feeding habits, and what is typical for your baby’s mouth.

Contact your pediatrician or dentist sooner if you notice persistent white or brown spots on teeth, swelling, injury to the mouth, or pain that is difficult to soothe. Practical, early advice is often all a family needs.
